The Trakehner
The history of the Trakehner can be traced back to the 13th century, making Troika Trakehner Stud Farm home to some of the worlds oldest European bloodlines. In 1732, King Friedrich Wilhelm 1 founded the Royal Trakehner Stud Farm in what was then East Prussia. It is from here that the breed took its name. He recognized that a lighter, more agile horse with more endurance and speed than the previous heavy horses was required. In the 1800’s, selected English Thoroughbred and Arabian bloodlines were introduced to refine the breed, giving more elegance and speed to the horses. This created a breed that is now prized for conformation, breathtaking beauty, willingness and the unmistaken desire to please.
Trakehners are energetic, good-tempered and move with an easy grace in all gaits. They are especially known for their magnificent light, springy, and effortless “floating” trot. The breed produces a high-quality diverse performance horse to be used in all disciplines; dressage, show jumping, eventing, hunting and harness sport.
Trakehner horses have an enviable record in classical equestrian sports. For instance Pepel, a world famous black stallion has earned European, Olympic and World titles. Also, the stallion Topkij performed brilliantly in the Moscow Olympics and has subsequently been standing at stud.
Today, the Trakehner is among the best represented horse breeds in the world-ranking list for Dressage.
Troika features several related generations of Trakehners. |
