The Achal Teke
The Achal Teke breed originated in Turkmenia, arising from local southern horses that were raised and bred in isolated areas far from the diluting influences of other breeds.
A classic saddle horse of handsome and distinctive conformation, the Achal Teke has been famous for its speed and beauty since the days of Alexander The Great. After the Achal Teke was imported into Russia and Western Europe, the horsemen in these areas carefully bred this unique breed to preserve those qualities most respected in the breed; golden coat, long slender neck, proudly poised head, and lean legs. The breeding also preserved Achal Teke’s perfect saddle-horse temperament – a fiery spirit combined with submissiveness and attachment to its owner.
This is an ideal breed of horse for equestrian sports; in fact many of them hold world records. Perepel, a stallion, is the record holder in the long jump at 8.78 meters (28.8 feet), and Poligon, also a stallion, holds the high jump record of 2.25 meters (7.4 feet). Absent, yet another Achal Teke stallion, was the winner at the Rome Olympics Grand Prix and was universally recognized as the “world’s best sport horse”. The Achal Teke horses are also endurance specialists, bred for centuries to cover as much as 100 desert miles in a day if the need arose.
Troika is currently home to two Achal Teke mares and several offspring, all of which with exceptional pedigrees that can be viewed here on our website, and in more detail on site at Troika Trakehner Stud Farm. |
